I am attending induction for the care assistance. This is quite an interesting thing. Today we looked at some things that move people in space. It’s called a hoist. They look pretty much like on the picture I shown and help to move a person from bed to chair, from chair to the toilet and so on. You have to always be aware that the end of this metal thing is spinning and can accidentally hit a person that you are transporting. I feel myself a bit uncomfortable in the group, for most of the people in the group are ladies and out of 11 there are only 2 men. So today we had to do test moves from chairs and from bed. That was quite fun. There are some techniques how to put such a slippery piece of cloth under a service user so that it would be easier to move him to sitting position. The only thing that scared me was the fact that we had some training with those who are relatively lightweight and and are healthy, but most service users how I understand it are going to be sick and heavy. That worries me a little bit. Tomorrow they will explain how to deal with medicines. Those who do not pass the test will not be able to get a job.
Interesting stuff from the lesson:
1. In case of fire you have to call 999 and ask for fire brigade to come over to that address. After this you have to wait for the firemen. If the fire burns strongly, then you have to go outside of the property and close the door. Now the most interesting thing was this. If the service user (poor grandmother or grandmother) can move, you can assist them in leaving the property. However, if they are bed-ridden, you shouldn’t attempt to save them. You just have to take care of yourself and leave the property closing the door behind you. That’s it. I was shocked.
2. You help a service user to walk down the hall. Accidentally he falls down. You should resist initial reaction to help him not to fall. You should let him fall. That’s what the policy says. Also you are not allowed to help him stand up. In that case you can hurt yourself or the service user. Dial 999 and your manager and explain the situation.
Also if a service user goes to the stairway, tries to go down and falls, you shouldn’t catch him, nor should you even try to do it. Otherwise you will spread him like butter on the stairs. That’s what the policy says. If a service user wants to fall, you should let him fall. After that you should ring 999, your manager and explain the situation.
3. Many of the elderly service users die because of the shock of going to the hospital.
4. Many things are forbidden, not allowed to do, and the reason is that if something happens they going to sue the company, and that is going to affect their insurance and reputation.
