15. I tried reading this classic, but just couldn’t bring myself to finish it. There were certainly a lot of great quotes in it. But, I found the content too dark, lacking joy, very gloomy, with a strong focus on mortification of the soul. G. Dill (Tirana, Albania)

16. Thomas Kempis’s contemplative mysticism needs to be read with an extra
discernment since he might have unwittingly deployed some spiritual
landmines. What bothers me the most is his infatuation with the doctrine
of transubstantiation in the third section of the book that views the
bread and wine consumed during the Lord’s Supper as literal body and
blood of Christ. Kempis made an exegetical error on John 6:53-56 by
interpreting this passage as referring to a sacrament. A. Sutono, a.k.a., Birdey The Observer

17. The problem with Kempis is that he’s coming from a totally different
camp than myself (or Protestants) on many of these positions. As I read
on, I started noticing frightening things. When he talks about
humility, he talks about cultivating it in one’s own heart by one’s own
power. When he talks about the grace of God, he doesn’t ever seem to do
so in reference to the gospel but instead seems to talk about ascetic
efforts and self-denial.
Beyond that, the entirety of the Christian
life seems like a battle against the self that is measured by the amount
of suffering that one encounters. Why did he think this? His medieval
Catholicism told him that such things (suffering and self denial)
contributed to his status before God; those things were efficacious and
Mary would dip into the treasury of merit for him when she saw them. Lyndon Unger “Armchair Theologian”
